Haji Chilonga was born in Masasi, Mtwara region into a family of traditional blacksmiths and potters. His favourite subject at school was always drawing and his first job was painting commercial signs and portraits. In search of more outlets for his work he come to Dar es Salaam in 1984 and started exhibiting still life and abstract compositions at the Bamayu Gallery. Over the years Chilonga has learnt many artistic skills from fellow artists and in turn he has invited many young aspiring Tanzanian artists to work with him at his home studio. As a member of the Rafiki Art Trust group, he has helped to setup many workshops bringing together artists from all over East Africa.
Inspired by his own trips abroad, Chilonga’s artworks are continuously changing in energies, themes, techniques and colours. Eager to share and to learn from others, Chilonga has participated in workshops in Bagamoyo, Kampala, Vienna and KwaZulu Natal. Last year his artworks were chosen for the Tanzanian President’s new private residence and he has just returned from exhibiting at the July 2008 ‘Black Art Festival’ in Atlanta,USA.
